NEW ZEALAND STUDENT VISA INFORMATION

All about visas and permits

Having a visa and permit for study in New Zealand means you can study in New Zealand for a set time at a specified institution as a fulltime student.

Length of stay

You can only stay in New Zealand on a student permit for a limited time. In most cases we issue a one-year, renewable permit. If your course is longer than one year you need to reapply for each year of study.

If your course is based on the New Zealand academic year, and you’ve paid your fees for the year, you may be granted a student permit which expires on 31 March of the following year.

In some circumstances you can stay a little longer in New Zealand, but you need to apply for permission to change your permit. For example, you need to apply for a new student permit if you:

Want to undertake further study so you can meet the requirements for membership to a professional association,

or

Are about to complete your course of study and you’d like to remain in New Zealand for your graduation.

Part-time study

Ordinarily, you need to be studying full time to be eligible for a student permit. However, we may allow you to study part time on a student permit if you are:

Coming to New Zealand to study for at least three years and the course requires you to gain practical work experience as part of your study

or

Coming to New Zealand to study for a maximum of nine months, your course meets New Zealand's foreign student policy requirements, you can show us that you have paid the course fees, and you meet our visitor requirements.

or

In the final semester of a course of study in New Zealand, resulting in a New Zealand qualification that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category.

Working while studying

You can work part time while studying full time, under certain circumstances:

To meet course requirements for practical work experience, or

During the Christmas and New Year holiday period if you are in a full-time course of study lasting 12 months or longer, and/or

For up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year if you are in full-time study:

At a private training establishment or tertiary institution and taking at least two academic years to complete, or

Culminating in a New Zealand qualification that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category, or

At a secondary school full year course of study in years 12 or 13, provided you have written permission from your school and written consent from your parent, or

In a full-time study course lasting at least six months, at a private training establishment or tertiary institution. Your visa or immigration officer has to be satisfied that the main purpose of your course of study is to develop English language skills, and, you have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of 5.0 or above (General or Academic Module), or

At a tertiary level of at least one academic year duration as part of an approved tertiary student exchange scheme.

People on visit or work permits who want to study

If you’re here on a visitor or work permit and you want to study full time for longer than three months, you need to apply for a student permit.

If you are here on a visitor or work permit and you want to study part time for longer than three months, you can apply for a Variation of Conditions to your current permit.

Why NZ govt. revoke a student permit

If you fail to meet our conditions of studying in New Zealand we may revoke your student permit. We will do this if:

You do not attend your course.

You work outside our restrictions.

You stop attending the course for which you were granted the permit and enrol in one we have not approved. You may be able to change courses or providers once you are here but you must first contact us so that we can either change your permit conditions or consider your application for a new student permit

Your NZAID funding stops, or

You are required to live with your parent or legal guardian and you do not live with your parent or legal guardian. Your parent or legal guardian’s permit may also be revoked in this case.

Once your permit is revoked you will no longer be lawfully in New Zealand and will have to leave.

EARNING WHILE STUDYING IN NEW ZEALAND

In New Zealand, student is permitted to work 20 hrs a week and full-time during vacations. STUDY MBA / PG DIPLOMA IN NEW ZEALAND

MBA in New Zealand

Combining the benefits of a developed country with the charm of a quiet and peaceful countryside, New Zealand offers some distinct advantages over other countries as a destination for education. An important advantage of the MBA Program in New Zealand is the affordability - getting a degree in NZ actually works out to be cheaper than many courses in other countries.

Another significant advantage is the welcoming nature of the New Zealanders and the relative ease in getting there : NZ has recently opened its doors to students from South East Asia. Getting yourself an MBA in New Zealand can change your life forever.

Here you can get all the informations how to get your MBA degree from New Zealand.

MBA in New Zealand - Eligibility

Bachelor Degree:

Most New Zealand universities accept the three-year graduation system for entry into the MBA programme. So, if you have a three-year bachelor degree like Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) or Bachelor of Science (BSc), this is acceptable as it is considered equivalent to a New Zealand Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

However, some universities may require an Honours degree. This is usually equivalent to B.Com. (H), B.Sc. (H) or a four year degree course like B.E.

For most good Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.

Work Experience:

Most New Zealand business schools require a minimum of three to four years of work experience for admission to the MBA program. This is essential.

There are almost no good options for students, looking for an MBA program in New Zealand that does not require work experience.

GMAT:

GMAT is accepted and recommended by some New Zealand universities for admission to the MBA program. Check the table below for more details:

TOEFL/IELTS:

You need to take either the TOEFL or IELTS for admission to an MBA program in New Zealand. This is required for almost all business schools. This mandatory for most schools even if you have studied in English medium throughout.

Living Expenses

The approximate annual living expenses are about NZ $ 12,000, which includes accommodation as well as other daily expenses.

However, the expenses are different for different people depending on the lifestyles and this is just a rough idea, based on the recommendations on the university websites.

Working while studying

If you are studying in New Zealand, you must not work unless allowed to do so by the New Zealand Immigration service. You can be granted permission to work for upto 15 hours a week.

If you have a student permit, you may be granted a work permit or a variation of your student permit to allow you to gain practical experience on completion of a three-year course, or over the summer vacation.

Post-MBA Employment

The New Zealand rules allow you to take up work after completion of atleast 3 years of full time education. But most students who can get a job after completion of their MBA, do manage to get a permit for work there. The New Zealand job market for MBAs is not really flourishing. Its a small country with a small population - jobs can be limited at the management positions.

But if you are smart, and can manage a job with your abilities, it can be a gateway to the rest of the world. Most people work in New Zealand to later move on to the western countries where it would be very difficult to find work in when applying directly from India.

Health Care

It is compulsory for students to take out full medical insurance cover. An average medical insurance cover for a single student would cost approximately NZ$500-600 per year. The Research & International Office holds information on New Zealand medical insurance companies which can be forwarded on request.

MBA in New Zealand - Student Visa

If you are not already in New Zealand and are applying to New Zealand to study, you must complete the requirements for the issue of a student visa. You will be given the required forms by the New Zealand Government office (the visa issuing officer) in your country. Requirements for a student visa will normally include :

1. VERY IMPORTANT:A written offer of a place, which notifies you that you have been accepted by an educational institution in New Zealand to study there.

2.EITHER A receipt for payment of course fees (You are not required to produce the receipt before your application has been approved in principle) OR - Evidence that you are exempt from course fees. For e.g. A New Zealand Government Scholarship.

3.A complete and signed ‘Application for Student Visa’ form, with a passport-size photograph. You will be required to pay a non-refundable student visa application fee.

4.A guarantee of accommodation – a written assurance from an educational institution or other person that suitable residential accommodation is available to you in New Zealand.

5.Your passport or certificate of identity, which must be valid for the period of time for which you are applying to study.

6.Evidence that funds are available for your maintenance throughout your stay. One of the four is acceptable as evidence :

A completed ‘Sponsoring a student’ form, in which your sponsor gives a financial undertaking that he or she can transfer to New Zealand NZ $7,000 a year : this amount is considered minimum for a year’s living expenses.

A letter from your educational institution confirming that your living expenses have already been paid for as part of your fees.

A bank document showing that funds of the required amount will be available to you in New Zealand ($1000 for each month of your stay for short term study, $7000 a year for long term study)

An award of a full New Zealand scholarship

If you intend of studying in New Zealand for more than 24 months, you will need :

1.Completed New Zealand Immigration service medical and chest X-ray certificates.
2.Character clearances, which must be two original character references (if under 17 years of age), or a local police clearance (if you are 17 and over). You will be advised of the procedure for obtaining these by the New Zealand government office.

All these documents are essential before a student visa is issued. When the overseas New Zealand government office is satisfied that your application is complete and in order, you will be issued a student visa .
